getting perspective.

It was so dark and gloomy outside this morning that when I woke up I had no idea what time it was. I rolled over to check my phone- 6:30AM- and, like clockwork, I heard the bugle call. Who wants to go to PT on a day like today? Yuck. And then, as I rolled over, willing myself to fall back to sleep, I saw the empty pillow beside me. Andrew’s still in the field today. Double yuck.

This rainy day forces me to address all the chores I’ve been shirking. I’d stay in my sweats all day if I could, but Maddie girl and I must venture out to the library to return some overdue audiobooks and to the commissary for ingredients for the rest of the week’s dinners. That’s right- I’m making a triumphant return to menu planning. And cooking, for that matter. Gone are the days of pasta, mac-n-cheese and, “Do you want Chinese?” Say hello again to- “If it’s not a meat, it’s not a meal!” We’ll see how long this lasts…

The small upside of leaving the house in the rain? I can use one of my Christmas presents- a new umbrella- London Fog Auto Open/Auto Close. Brilliant! Really, this brollie is a game changer and if you don’t have one, you should look into it. Especially if you are a mom who has to load up babies into the car during a torrential downpour. Instead of ending up looking like a frazzled, wet rat, I just leisurely rest my umbrella on top of the door and roof of the car, which provides a nice shade from the water while I strap Maddie in. Then I walk around to my door, hop into the driver seat, push the button, my umbrella snaps shut, I close the door and skid away. My baby stays dry, I stay dry and rain becomes a lot less stressful. It makes sense.

Anyway, all of that to say- my life would be easier today without the rain. But know my discomfort doesn’t hold a candle to being in the field today- soaked through ACUS, trying to stay warm in between training, unable to get dry before dark and shivering in your boots, while trying to fall asleep in your woobie on the cold, wet ground. Perspective is a powerful thing.

So…I’m going to make the most of this rainy day. And when our work is done, I’m going to snuggle up with my baby and a few good books and tell her how much I love her. And how much her Daddy loves her. I’m glad it’s just one more night in the woods.
